My interest in photography stems strongly from the ability it gives me to capture a moment in time no matter how small and insignificant it is and being able to share them with others. In my staged work I like to take inspiration from classical arts and stories from the past as I think reinterpreting and recreating them keeps the work alive.
I based these images off of the ancient Greek hymn ‘Homeric hymn to Demeter’. Instead of directly recreating scenes from the hymn I chose to explore the development of the character of Persephone, I did this by creating portraits in which I tried to summarise her character at different points throughout the story by using props and costume to symbolise aspects of her character. I chose to model for these portraits myself as I was trying to show what the character meant to me and I wanted to emphasise how it was my interpretation of the story and not meant to be a word for word recreation.
