My name is Lauren Jeffery, I am a freelance Fashion Photographer based in London/Kent. For this unit the theme was Storytelling and how to show that through a motion of images in our own choice of style and format. Original ideas I had were to create something that didn’t have an obvious storyline and be obscure with more emotion rather than show a story play out. I decided to merge Fashion photography with Art Nouveau and create vintage classics with modern dimension. Art Nouveau/ Art Deco was from 1890 onwards which featured a lot of vintage florals, repeat patterns and antiques with weird silhouettes such as candle sticks and lamp shades. This all inspired me to transform that element onto the human form and manipulate the body into patterns with florals/ mild with vibrant colour tones and bold structured silhouettes. I titled this projects ‘Nouveau Humain’ which is French for ‘New Human’.
With self-made floral headdress and plain backdrops, my female models wore the designs and held themselves in poses that I knew would stick out when manipulated in edit. I found that by standing side on, it created more of an effect rather than standing straight in the middle of the shot. Using several techniques, I managed to distort the photos into positions that ticked every aspect I wanted to come across with the vibe of an older style with my modern twist.
